How to Commission Bespoke Furniture

1.  Initial discussion
2.  Preliminary sketch designs
3.  Estimates and deposit
4.  Formal design / technical drawings
5.  Approval of materials and finishes
6.  Making, Finishing and Completion

The commissioning process often begins with initial contact being made by the client or decorator, with regard to a project or idea already in mind. We then meet or liaise with them to discuss their ideas and inspiration, drawing on a vast array of both examples of our own past work and existing styles or designs. A site visit also takes place at this initial stage, to obtain a clearer understanding of what is required with regard to architecture and setting.

Following this, Rupert translates the client’s thoughts to the Design Studio, in relation to their chosen inspiration and the setting. Sketch designs are drawn in reference to these, and shown to the client, along with estimates for the project. These sketches can then be revised until the client is happy the design matches their specification.

Once the design has been finalised and the go-ahead given, we ask for a 50% deposit. After receipt of this, the Design Studio produces technical working drawings and we provide the client with samples of materials and finishes to approve. We then proceed with the making, using only the finest materials and expert craftspeople. Finally, each piece is finished by hand in the London Workshop before being carefully delivered to the client or installed onsite if required, usually around 8-14 weeks after deposit. The final balance is then invoiced and the creation of a beautiful bespoke item in accordance with the client’s desires is complete.
